Fairly new camera

Alright, I have a pretty new camera and haven't fully appreciated everything that it is probably capable of but I am not. Last night it was raining pretty heavily so I went outside to take a picture and this is what I get.

I suppose if you click on it to see it bigger you can kind of tell it was raining. Mind you I didn't do anything special to take this, I was just seeing if it would even show the rain. Does anybody know a good way to photograph rain better? I've read some things about using shutter speed, but this camera is really just a big experiment to me.

Somehow I caught this photo one day of a rainbow just appearing.

And I was driving..and it was with my old camera.
